Discussing WiFi-no free lunch
By Mark Teasdale, Managing Director, RIEO Communications |
 |
| Free Internet-is it really the way to go? Mark Teasdale, Managing Director of RIEO Communications shares his thoughts.
Hotels offering free internet access are unlikely to be willing to absorb the increasing and on-going costs associated with the provision of a high quality, high speed internet solution. Guests now expect more than basic internet access. They require a reilable, robust, high bandwidth service, so the question to ask is, should this premium service really be free of charge?

Meeting Expectations
With Mark Teasdale, Managing Director, RIEO Communications |
 |
| As once cutting-edge technology disseminates to the masses and ups our expectations, the pressures really on for conference facilities to deliver the goods to corporate clients. We all know the horrors of unreliable technology; the squealing radio mike, the frozen slide show and the failing connections between a thousand bits of kit-each critical to a smooth-running seminar.
But solve these little glitches and you may still be a step behind satisfying this important client. Keeping up with the requirements of this lucrative market requires constant investment and a sharp eye on the needs of guests. "We conducted research which showed that both the eight-hour....."

Gaining leverage from High Speed Internet Access (HSIA)
By Mark Teasdale, Managing Director, RIEO Communications |
 |
| For the business user, gaining access to High Speed Internet Access outside the office environment is one of today's most important needs, regardless of where in the world they may be. Historically bars, hotels and restaurants have offered their customers Internet access as a given, predominantly on a paid for - dial up service. When this technology offering was first introduced providers 'revenue shared' with the venue and as a result were not in control of billing but more importantly, could not be flexible with their service provision.
But what of the future? There is now a move towards providing HSIA 'free of charge' to the guest as part of a unique marketing - loyalty strategy.....

Don't become a Wi-Fi Hypochondriac
By Carlene Naldrett, RIEO Communications |
 |
| There has been much discussion in the media recently as to public concern of the dangers of Wi-Fi networks. The concern is based on the fact that Wireless technology emits Electro-Magnetic Fields (EMF), and the question is whether this might pose any health dangers to society.
The recent Panorama documentary that focused on the use of Wi-Fi networks in schools discussed the risks of EMF exposure causing childhood cancer. The prospect of a new technology causing cancer in children is harrowing, serious...yet is it real?

Free Internet connection is it really a worth while marketing tool?
Mark Teasdale, Managing Director of RIEO Communications |
 |
| With the internet becoming more accessible, is the hospitality industry keeping up to date, ensuring that guests online expectations are met?
Is it now a given that business users need that all-important connection to the World Wide Web 24/7? Whether right or wrong, are business users really concerned about this being a free or paid for service? As long as the connection to the Internet is available does it matter? Admittedly many users are content to be charged for access, but there are those who are part of a new breed who scour the Internet for WiFi hotspots and free connectivity. So does that meant that venues are missing a valuable marketing trick by not offering guest's free internet access?

Why uncontrolled Internet access is not to be recommended
Mark Teasdale, Managing Director of RIEO Communication highlights the pitfalls of providing uncontrolled Internet access. |
 |
By allowing total, complete and unfettered access to your network, you relinquish any and all control over who is able to use your system. Nearby residents, passers by, motorists parked outside, taxi drivers, pedestrians; absolutely anyone will be able to access your Wi-Fi network without you having any control whatsoever.
These could be perfectly normal people or members of society who don't want to be traced. In much the same way as you can never stop criminals breaking in to your house, by locking the door you have a level of security and a deterrent. People only enter if you invite them. If you leave your door wide open then you can expect trouble at some point. The same goes for your Wi-Fi.
